Frequently Asked Questions
Headline rates come with conditions. Among the credit cards here, the Fold Bitcoin Credit Card pays 1.5% in bitcoin and up to 5% with a Fold Reserve balance of $100,000 or more, on the first $5,000 of purchases each month. The Coinbase One Card pays 2% to 4% in bitcoin depending on assets held on Coinbase, and needs a paid Coinbase One membership. The Gemini Credit Card pays 4% on Gas, EV & Transit on up to $300 of monthly spend. The Crypto.com Visa Card, a prepaid card, pays up to 4.5% in CRO at its Obsidian tier, which needs a $500,000 CRO lockup and caps the rate at $5,000 of monthly spend.
Most crypto cards pay rewards into the issuer's own app or exchange account (Gemini, Coinbase, Fold, Crypto.com), so you open that account as part of applying. The Venmo Credit Card works differently: it pays cash back, and you can choose to have Venmo use that cash back to buy crypto inside the Venmo app.
The Coinbase Card is a Visa prepaid debit card: there's no credit check, rewards come from a rotating list of crypto, and the rate is variable. The Coinbase One Card is an American Express credit card that pays 2% to 4% back in bitcoin, tiered by assets on Coinbase, with the higher tiers capped at a combined $10,000 of monthly purchases. It requires a paid Coinbase One membership (from $49.99 a year).
The BlockFi Rewards Visa was discontinued after BlockFi filed for bankruptcy in November 2022, following exposure to the FTX collapse. Cardholders were notified to stop using the card. It is no longer available and is listed here for historical reference only.
Not for the lower tiers. The Crypto.com Visa Card is a prepaid card. The free Midnight Blue tier earns 0%. Ruby Steel (1.5%) and Jade Green / Royal Indigo (2.5%) can be unlocked with a monthly or annual subscription or a 12-month CRO lockup of $500 or $5,000. Icy White / Rose Gold (3.5%) and Obsidian (4.5%) need lockups of $50,000 and $500,000 in CRO. Every paid tier has a monthly rewards cap, and rewards are paid in CRO.
Check Gemini's site for current eligibility before applying. The card pays 4% on Gas, EV & Transit on up to $300 of spend per month (then 1%), 3% on dining, 2% on groceries and 1% on everything else, in bitcoin or 50+ cryptos. It has no annual fee and is issued by WebBank. Bitcoin, Solana, XRP and Zcash editions are available.
The Fold Bitcoin Credit Card and the Coinbase One Card pay rewards in bitcoin. The Gemini Credit Card lets you choose bitcoin or another supported crypto, and has a Bitcoin edition. The Venmo Credit Card can use your cash back to buy the crypto you choose.
The IRS hasn't issued guidance specific to crypto card rewards. Rewards earned by spending are often treated like cash-back rebates rather than income, while bonuses that don't require spending may be treated differently. When you later sell, trade or spend the crypto, you may owe capital gains tax on any increase in value since you received it, so keep records of what each reward was worth on the day it arrived. Consult a tax professional for guidance on your specific situation.
