Crypto users have spent years being told to “verify before signing.” The problem is that too often there has been nothing useful to verify.

That is the core weakness behind blind signing: a wallet asks a user to approve a transaction, but the human-facing message does not clearly show what the transaction will actually do. The user sees a string of data, a generic contract interaction, or a vague approval prompt. The chain may know the details. The smart contract may know the details. The attacker certainly knows the details. The person clicking the button is left guessing.

Ethereum’s new clear signing effort is a serious attempt to fix that gap. According to the Ethereum.org blog, an Ethereum working group made up of wallet developers, security firms, and the Ethereum Foundation’s Trillion Dollar Security Initiative has launched an open standard designed to reduce blind signing, a structural flaw linked to major user losses, including the Bybit hack.

That matters because wallet security is no longer just a consumer UX issue. It is becoming custody infrastructure.

For retail holders, blind signing is the difference between approving a harmless-looking interaction and giving away meaningful control over an asset. For funds, businesses, and treasuries, it is an operational risk hiding inside everyday workflows. For banks and asset managers considering deeper crypto integration, it is one more reason DeFi still looks too brittle for serious balance-sheet use.

The Security Problem Is Not Just Bad Users

Crypto security has often been framed as a personal responsibility problem. Use a hardware wallet. Don’t click suspicious links. Don’t share seed phrases. Double-check addresses. Keep your recovery phrase offline.

All of that remains true. But it is incomplete.

A user can follow basic security advice and still be placed in a bad approval environment. If the wallet does not translate the transaction into understandable consequences, the user is being asked to make a security decision without the relevant information.

That is not diligence. That is theater.

Clear signing tries to move the industry away from that pattern by making transaction approvals more readable and standardized. The goal is not to make every user a smart contract auditor. The goal is to show enough meaningful information that a normal holder, a business operator, or a custody team can understand what they are approving before the transaction is signed.

This is especially important because crypto scams have shifted from simple theft attempts toward workflow manipulation. Attackers do not always need a private key. Institutions Need Auditability, Not Just Better Prompts

The institutional angle is even more important.

Internal policy checks can be more precise. Auditors can evaluate whether a signed transaction matched the intended business action.

That is how crypto moves from individual key management toward institutional operating procedure.

It also explains why wallet security and DeFi adoption are connected. If DeFi wants banks and asset managers to use onchain systems for real operations, it has to offer more than yield and composability. It has to make approvals, permissions, and risk controls legible enough for professional finance.

The Attack Surface Is Expanding

The urgency is rising because crypto usage is becoming more complex.

Users are no longer just sending Bitcoin from one address to another. They are bridging assets, staking, borrowing, swapping, minting, delegating, wrapping tokens, using L2s, interacting with smart accounts, and approving recurring permissions across multiple apps.

Each additional workflow creates another approval moment. Each approval moment is a chance for confusion.

That is why wallet security cannot stay frozen at “protect the seed phrase.” Seed phrase theft is still a major risk, but it is not the only one. The modern custody stack has to deal with malicious approvals, phishing domains, compromised front ends, allowance abuse, social engineering, software updates, recovery failures, and operational mistakes.

What Holders Should Change Now

For retail users, the first step is to treat signing as a high-risk action, not a routine click.

Before approving a transaction, users should ask what the transaction is doing, whether the wallet screen clearly explains it, whether the website or app is the intended one, and whether the approval grants ongoing permissions. If the wallet cannot show enough detail to make the action understandable, that is a reason to stop.

Users should also separate funds by purpose. Long-term holdings do not need to sit in the same wallet used for experiments, mints, airdrop claims, or unfamiliar DeFi apps. A clean separation between storage wallets and active wallets limits damage when a signing mistake happens.

For small businesses, the standard should be higher.
