Fixed-rate lending is easy to describe and difficult to turn into a functioning market.
TermMax, a protocol developed by Term Structure Labs, announced on August 26 that it had received a strategic investment from YZi Labs. The terms were not disclosed. According to Decrypt, the protocol has now raised more than $8 million, with earlier backing from investors including Cumberland DRW, HashKey Capital, Decima Fund, Longling Capital and MZ Web3 Fund.
The financing itself says little about whether on-chain bonds will attract durable demand. The more consequential question is what happens after a fixed-term loan is created.
Can a lender sell the position before maturity? Is there enough liquidity to discover a credible price? Can borrowers refinance without facing a sudden gap between one maturity and the next? And can users compare the quoted yield with competing opportunities after accounting for fees, liquidity and smart-contract risk?
Those questions determine whether fixed-rate DeFi becomes useful financial infrastructure or remains a collection of thinly traded products.
Fixed rates solve only one part of the problem
Most familiar DeFi lending markets use variable interest rates. Borrowing costs adjust as the utilization of a lending pool changes, allowing the protocol to use price as a tool for balancing supply and demand.
That model offers flexibility, but it also creates uncertainty. A borrower may know the current annualized rate without knowing the total financing cost over the intended life of the loan. A lender may see an attractive yield today that falls when new liquidity enters the pool.
Fixed-rate credit offers a cleaner proposition: lock in financing for a defined period and settle according to predetermined terms. That can be valuable for traders hedging future expenses, businesses managing treasury commitments and investors seeking a more predictable return.
Yet predictability at issuance does not guarantee liquidity afterward.
A position promising repayment at a future date behaves differently from an instantly redeemable pool deposit. Its market value can change as broader yields move, the borrower’s perceived risk changes or the position approaches maturity. Selling early may require accepting a discount.
In conventional markets, those mechanics are supported by dealers, benchmarks, custody systems and large pools of repeat buyers. DeFi protocols must recreate enough of that structure through smart contracts, liquidity incentives and transparent market data.
The real test is the secondary market
The label “on-chain bond” can obscure an important distinction. Creating a tokenized claim is not the same as creating a liquid bond market.
A primary market lets a borrower raise capital. A secondary market lets the resulting claim change hands. Without the second component, lenders may effectively be committed until maturity even if the position is technically transferable.
That constraint matters because headline yield is not the only return variable. Investors also need to consider the cost of exiting.
A position offering a higher fixed rate than a liquid alternative may still be less attractive if the holder must take a substantial discount to sell early. Conversely, a lower-yielding instrument may be more useful if it has dependable buyers, narrow spreads and transparent pricing.
For retail users and small crypto businesses, the practical questions include:
- How much value would be lost if the position had to be sold before maturity? - Is the quoted price based on an executable market or a model? - How concentrated is liquidity among a small number of providers? - What happens when incentives expire? - Does the position mature into an asset the holder actually wants? - Can collateral be liquidated efficiently during stressed conditions?
A protocol can report deposits or issuance without answering any of them. Those figures measure activity, not necessarily market quality.
Fragmented maturities can dilute liquidity
Fixed-term markets introduce another structural complication: every maturity can become its own liquidity venue.
A loan maturing in one month is not interchangeable with a loan maturing in six months. Even positions involving the same assets may carry different prices because their duration differs. Add multiple collateral types, borrowers and rate structures, and liquidity can become fragmented across many small markets.
That fragmentation makes capital efficiency harder.
Liquidity providers must decide where to place funds, traders must navigate separate order books or pools, and borrowers may find strong demand at one maturity but little at another. A protocol can offer a broad menu of terms while spreading available capital too thinly for any single market to trade well.
The sensible measure is therefore not simply the number of markets or total value deposited. Investors should look for depth around commonly used maturities and the cost of executing realistic trade sizes.
A market capable of absorbing a small transaction may still be unusable for a business treasury. The difference becomes especially important when several participants attempt to exit at once.
Refinancing risk moves on-chain
Fixed-rate credit removes uncertainty about the rate during a loan’s term. It does not remove refinancing risk.
When debt matures, the borrower must repay, roll the position into a new loan or sell assets. If market liquidity has deteriorated, the next round of financing may carry a much higher cost—or may not be available at all.
This can produce maturity cliffs. Borrowers appear stable while existing financing remains outstanding, but pressure builds as the repayment date approaches. If many positions mature near the same time, demand for new credit can collide with limited lender capacity.
For protocols, that makes maturity distribution a key risk indicator. A large volume of debt spread across many dates is generally a different liquidity problem from the same volume concentrated in a narrow window.
Users should also distinguish a fixed borrowing rate from a fixed economic outcome. Collateral prices can still fall. Liquidations can still occur. Smart contracts can still fail. A borrower can still face unfavorable refinancing terms at maturity.
Fixed rates make one variable predictable. They do not make the entire position low-risk.
What US users should examine
For US-accessible DeFi, product design is only one part of the diligence process. Users also need to understand what claim they are acquiring, who or what owes the repayment, and whether access depends on a particular interface or jurisdiction.
Terms such as “bond,” “note” and “fixed income” carry familiar meanings in traditional finance, but an on-chain instrument may operate differently. It could represent a pooled lending position, a tokenized maturity claim or another contractual structure. The label alone does not establish its legal treatment or the protections available to its holder.
Small businesses should be particularly cautious about treating fixed-rate DeFi positions as cash equivalents. A known maturity value does not ensure immediate redemption at that value. Treasury funds needed for payroll, taxes or operating expenses require liquidity on the date the business needs them—not merely at the instrument’s scheduled maturity.
Before committing capital, users should separate four figures that are often collapsed into one yield number:
1. The stated fixed rate. 2. The expected return after protocol and transaction costs. 3. The realizable return if held to maturity. 4. The likely return after an early sale under current liquidity conditions.
If a dashboard does not make those differences clear, the apparent simplicity of fixed-rate lending may be misleading.
Funding is a starting point, not the result
YZi Labs’ investment gives TermMax additional backing as it develops fixed-rate lending and on-chain bond infrastructure. The participation of earlier investors, including Cumberland DRW and HashKey Capital, also shows that professional capital has been interested in the project across multiple funding rounds.
But investor names and cumulative fundraising do not establish market depth.
The durable opportunity in fixed-rate DeFi is not simply putting maturities on-chain. It is building enough issuance, secondary liquidity and refinancing capacity for those maturities to function through changing market conditions.
That progress should be judged with operating evidence: trading depth, spreads, maturity concentration, repeat borrowing and the ability to exit without severe price concessions. Until those measures are visible and resilient, on-chain bonds should be evaluated as emerging credit instruments—not as digital substitutes for liquid cash management.
