What Is HBAR?
Hedera is a public distributed ledger governed by a council of leading global organizations. Unlike proof-of-work or traditional proof-of-stake networks, Hedera uses hashgraph consensus — achieving high throughput (10,000+ TPS), low and predictable fees (fractions of a cent), and carbon-negative operations verified by third-party audits.
HBAR is the native currency of the Hedera network, used to pay transaction fees and secure the network through staking. Unlike most blockchains, Hedera's hashgraph algorithm achieves Byzantine fault tolerance with asynchronous finality — meaning transactions reach mathematical certainty without the probabilistic confirmations of traditional blockchains.
Hedera is one of a handful of networks actively integrated into enterprise payment infrastructure and CBDC pilots globally. In 2025–2026, it has been chosen by the Australian Reserve Bank, SWIFT, and multiple sovereign governments for real-world financial infrastructure pilots.
The Governing Council
Hedera's most important differentiator: no single entity controls the network. The Governing Council consists of term-limited seats held by some of the world's most trusted institutions — decisions require consensus from this body.
